Doctors fix people. They might get their hands a little bloody in the process, but they get the job done. At least that's what we expect of them.

But what happens when a physician breaks or become ill? Can't they just fix themselves? Is it even possible? Once a physician becomes ill or mentally broken, are they done, lepers for life?

This Force of Memory chronicles a surgeon's spiral into addiction. It is a memoir of a physician who becomes an addict after experiencing the horrors of medical error and PTSD first hand.

For a surgeon it is almost incomprehensible that the current/best addiction treatment programs have a "spiritual" basis. But they do. This Force of Memory explores the medical/spiritual paradox that is the essence of modern addiction treatment. It is the memoir of a surgeon who, to his own surprise, discovers a healing mechanism quite removed from the operating room.

The Force of Memory is the story of a surgeon's struggle with the disease of addiction and his process of recovery. It is the best book on the disease of addiction and the process of recovery that I have ever read. While the first part of the book rambled some and there were a number of relevant, but annoying (as they disrupted the flow of the book), quotes thrown in, the author's detailing of his process of addiction were insightful and thought provoking. As a scientist, the author struggled and struggled with the obsessive and compulsive nature of addiction. He resisted a spiritual solution at every corner. Yet, when he had no other possible medical or psychiatric cure available for his healing, he finally surrendered in desperation to a spiritual solution to his disease. Given his fight and strong resistance to anything other than a medical solution, the process of his surrendering to a power greater than himself was a sweet and powerful journey. It was powerful, touching and moving. This honest account touched my life. I am glad that I did not give up at the first part of the book. I would have liked to have known the outcome of the Medical Board on his ability to practice medicine short-term. Thank you, Noah Paine, for writing this honest and thought provoking book!

This Force of Memory edition by Noah Paine Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

This book is both disarmingly (and at times uncomfortably) honest, and brilliantly hopeful. Dr. Paine can grind out a sentence that is at times poetic--a pleasure to read, even just for the sheer enjoyment of language itself. Philosophical, psychological, medical, spiritual, insightful...and readable all at once. And generalizable to all forms of addiction and vice. A must read for anyone who struggles with addiction or wants understanding into the mind of a loved one who struggles with this disease.
None of us who do not deal with addiction can truly understand the pain and devastation people go through. This book, however, gave me an insight and certain understanding that I had not previously had. The philosophical passages were hard at first, but so necessary to weave the tapestry of the story.
I consider myself well-read, but this story explained aspects that I had never considered or read about before - eg., sobriety vs. abstinence, to name one.
A brilliant book. Long, yes. Worth reading every word, absolutely! Thank you to Dr. Paine. May your life give you peace. You've done an amazing service to countless people.
I found the frequent song quotes a little distracting. But I thought it was an honest account of one man's downward spiral into addiction. He offers some very interesting insight into the problems with how we remember things, how that plays into addiction, and how the brain works. There is a lot of garbage in the world of ebooks. So it's nice to read an ebook that really offers something. This is the sort of stuff you'd hear in a TedX talk or on Radiolab.
A great book into the life of an addict and doctor. I enjoyed this book tremendously. The book gives theories on how the brain works in an addict.
Thank you Doctor, it is a valuable service to society to have made your story available at such a reasonable price in Kinlde format.

I think Doctor Paine insightfully synthesizes several very important theories and concepts in addiction and treatment. His is a creative work of the first order and I would urge the Doctor to write more books if he so desires.
Addiction is a fact of our times. Those of us who are fortunate enough to view chemical addiction from the outside are impatient with others who can't share our views. And who is more reviled for that failed expectation than a doctor who should 'know better'?
Dr. Paine brings a perspective to this addiction discussion that I found enlightening. (By the way did anyone else find an interesting connection between the doctor' s name and his topic? Our author has a sense of humor.)
That aside, the book was fascinating and opened insights into a remarkably complex subject. Call me dim but I had never considered that there might be a difference between sobriety and abstinence which the good Dr. makes painfully clear. While the book is somewhat wordy, I think by the author's own comments we can conclude that he finds some thoughts almost impossible to convey without explaining with some redundancies. The Force of Memory A Surgeon's Story of Addiction is an excellent book and reading it is absolutely rewarding!
With 10 years of self reported sobriety Dr. Noah Paine seems to have corralled his demons. Continued good fortune Dr. Paine whoever you are.
I finished reading Noah Paine's "Force of Memory" yesterday. It is way too soon to describe in any coherent way how this book changed me, but I know it has. It is not too soon, however, to say that my life has been enriched with a new understanding, hope, and direction toward my own recovery. I will let it seep in and buoy me for now. I look forward to reading it again to plumb more of the meaning I may have missed. Thank you Dr. Paine for a stupendously articulate, honest and revealing memoir of addiction. A postscript to my post is that - more than most books I read - the impact of this book on me is largely due to my readiness, willingness, and ability to hear the message. I am so ready to Surrender.
